DEFINITION:
Under administrative direction, is responsible for implementing and enforcing all national, state, and local codes applicable to an Ohio Board of Building Standards of a certified building department and local building department and reviewing and revising the City Building Code as needed to ensure conformance with standards; performs related duties as required.
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
(May not include all of the duties performed.)
Serves as the Building Official and Residential Building Official of a certified building department and certified residential building department;
Reviews controversial building plans and inspections for compliance with applicable national, state, and local codes;
Resolves code interpretation differences and problems concerning building plan reviews or inspections among architects, engineers, contractors and staff;
Reviews the City of Columbus Building Code and evaluates compliance with requirements of the Ohio Building Code, Ohio Building Officials Association 1-2-3 Family Dwellings Code, Ohio Mechanical Code, Ohio Plumbing Code, and the National Electrical Code;
Directs the Assistant Chief Building Official, structural/electrical/ plumbing/heating inspection units, and the construction plans examination unit;
Writes adjudication orders regarding one, two and three family dwellings and all buildings regulated under the Ohio Building Code;
Writes proposals for revising the City Building Code and submits them to the Administrator for approval;
Confers with the Deputy Director, fire prevention officials, state officials and others regarding code application, interpretation and consistency;
Assists in the preparation of the annual budget request and yearly state report for the inspections and plans examination section.
May serve on committees at local, state and national levels to develop and implement changes to existing codes.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Possession of a valid State of Ohio certification as a Building Official and Residential Building Official and two (2) years of experience in the administration and enforcement of building codes. Substitution(s): a valid interim certification issued by the Ohio Board of Building Standards with full and final certification as Chief Building Official and Chief Residential Official must be obtained by the end of the probationary period.
Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
