City of Lakewood – Assistant Building Commissioner

CITY OF LAKEWOOD DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY CIVIL SERVICE OPENING
DIVISION OF HOUSING & BUILDING
ASSISTANT BUILDING COMMISSIONER

Salary Grade 35 ($68,072.62 – $96,066.16)

The City of Lakewood is seeking an Assistant Building Commissioner for our Division of Housing and Building. The chosen candidate will assist  the Building Commissioner in managing all staff and functions related to assigned division operations, including: overseeing plan review, permitting functions; inspections operations and staff management; approving notices, requests, etc.; attending various meetings; directing Project Pride functions; receiving and delegating complaints. Reviews inspections and approves corrections; reviews and approves residential plans, applications and drawings; issues permits; coordinates department projects; reviews proposed architectural changes and determines if formal approval is required; requests various tests; performs inspections; develops correspondence related to work activities, violations, etc.; receives and assigns special inspections; conducts related research; and responds to questions and complaints from staff and the general public. Acts as the Division’s Housing Officer, Residential Building Official, and administers the Residential Code of Ohio.

Qualified candidates must have a minimum of four to five years of progressively responsible experience, possess a High School Diploma or GED, or a combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. At minimum, must be State certified CBO interim at time of hire, must obtain full certification within two years of hire date. State of Ohio RBO and RBI certifications required. Must be licensed Building Inspector for the State of Ohio with strong commercial building inspector skills. Must have a valid Ohio Driver’s License with less than 8 points. An OBBS Electrical Safety Inspector (ESI) certification is preferred, but not required.  The selected candidate must be able to pass a civil service examination and successfully complete a drug screen and police background investigation.
