City of East Cleveland – Building and Housing Inspector

Building and Housing Department Inspector-Application Requirements
Position Title: Building and Housing Department Inspector
Location: The City of East Cleveland
Department: Building and Housing
Job Summary:
The Building and Housing Department Inspector is responsible for ensuring that properties
comply with local building codes, ordinances, and regulations. This role involves
conducting inspections, issuing citations, maintaining accurate records, and participating
in legal proceedings. The position requires a combination of fieldwork, office duties, and
strong communication skills to collaborate with residents, contractors, and government
entities.

Two positions available.

Salary: $20/hour, plus full benefits.


Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Education:
    o High School Diploma or GED is required.
  2. Certifications:
    o State Certifications: Preferred but not mandatory.
    o Ohio Driver’s License: A valid driver’s license is required.
  3. Experience:
    o Experience in a building inspection or related field is a plus but not required.
    o Knowledge of property maintenance codes and local city ordinances is
    required.
  4. Skills and Abilities:
    o Computer Proficiency:
  • Must be proficient in using Microsoft Word and Excel for
    documentation, reports, and tracking inspections.
  • Ability to navigate computer programs and databases for inspection
    reports, citations, and records.
  • Self-Motivation:
  • Must be able to take initiative on tasks.
  • Must be Self-Motivated.
    o Communication Skills:
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are required to clearly
    explain issues and communicate with the public, contractors, and
    government officials.
  • Ability to effectively issue violations, citations, and work through legal
    proceedings.
    o Interpersonal Skills:
    ■ Must be able to interact and work cooperatively with a wide range of
    people, including property owners, contractors, and community
    members.
    o Knowledge of Legal Process:
    ■ Ability to follow the legal procedure process, including issuing
    violations and citations and participating in court proceedings when
    necessary.
    o Attention to Detail:
    ■ Must have a keen eye for detail when inspecting properties and
    documenting findings accurately.
  • Physical Requirements:
    o Must be able to stand for extended periods and walk long distances during
    field inspections .
    . o Ability to lift up to 40 pounds as needed for tasks related to inspections and
    documentation.
    Additional Requirements:
  • Field Work:
    o Must be comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions and in
    diverse environments.
  • Legal Knowledge:
    o A good understanding of property maintenance codes, city ordinances, and
    general building regulations.
  • Teamwork and Collaboration:
    o Ability to work effectively as part of a team while also being able to handle
    individual tasks independently.

Preferred (but not required):

  • State Certification in Building Inspection (e.g., ICC certifications or equivalent)
  • Experience in Legal Proceedings related to building codes and ordinances.
