HOUSING/BUILDING INSPECTOR

General Purpose:
The Housing/Building Code Inspector is responsible for ensuring residential and commercial properties comply with local, state, and federal building codes, zoning regulations, and safety standards. This role involves conducting inspections, identifying violations, and providing guidance to property owners, contractors, and developers to maintain structural integrity, safety, and habitability.
Essential Duties and responsibilities:
•Provides technical assistance to residents and contractors in review of proposals, plans, and specifications for compliance with City codes and regulations.
•Read and enforce all basic residential codified ordinances.
•Conducts on-site inspections of residential and commercial properties for compliance.
•Assess damages, determine who is responsible for correction, and establish deadlines for work to be completed.
•Records and maintains records on code violations. Issue correction notices and citations.
•Document efforts to bring properties into compliance.
•Conduct follow-up inspections to ensure that work is completed.
•Maintain records of building and inspection activity.
•Perform Point of Sale, Certificate of Occupancy & Compliance inspections for commercial and multi-family sale upon request.
•Ensure all inspections are scheduled, performed (residential, commercial & multi-family), and inputted into the computer system in a timely manner.
•Handles inquiries from residents and contractors.
•Testify in court or administrative hearings regarding code violations and enforcement actions.
•Stay updated on local, state, and national building codes and industry best practices.
•Collaborate with other government agencies, fire departments, and public health officials as needed.
•Explain, interpret, and provide guidance regarding all applicable codes within the area of responsibility to architects, engineers, contractors, developers, and all other interested parties
•Performs related duties as required.
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
•High school graduate or equivalent experience and /or related education and at least eighteen (18) years of age.
•Two (2) years on-site construction experience (electrical, framing, home or commercial construction) preferred.
•State of Ohio Certification in Residential Building Inspector and or Commercial Building Inspector. In addition, Certification as an Electrical Safety Inspector and/or Plumbing Inspector or be able to obtain such certification within twelve months of hire with an approved interim certification.
•Both certifications preferred. (Residential/Building)
•One year minimum experience as Property Maintenance Inspector (preferred).
•Knowledgeable in the enforcement of the International Property Maintenance Code.
•General knowledge of code enforcement, including property maintenance.
•Basic knowledge of home construction, municipal zoning and building codes.
•Ability to effectively communicate with the general public.
•Valid Ohio Driver’s License
•Maintain employee morale.
