Cleveland Heights Building Commissioner/Official

JOB TITLE:              BUILDING COMMISSIONER/OFFICIAL

REPORTS TO:           City Manager

The City of Cleveland Heights is accepting applications for the position of the Building Commissioner/Official. This position is responsible for implementing the City Building Codes as needed to ensure conformance with standards; serves as the Chief Building Official, coordinate the Board of Architectural Review; directs and manages the Building Department including supervising assigned staff; and performs related duties as required.  The Building Commissioner/Official reports directly to the City Manager and works in a team environment with City officials.

Cleveland Heights welcomes candidates with at least five (5) years of extensive supervisory and administrative experience as a building contractor, building inspector, architectural-structural engineer or related field.  The successful candidate must have good/solid oral and written communication skills and have a strong work record of demonstrated success enforcing the codified ordinance of the City and interacting with property owners, homeowners, business owners, developers, architects and contractors on a daily basis.

QUALIFICATIONS:

a.       A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in engineering, architecture or related field; OR, any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in engineering, architecture or related field.

b.      Must be a State of Ohio certified Building Official or be able to secure interim certification with the Ohio Board of Building Standards within 45 days of employment and obtain permanent certification within two years of securing interim certification.

c.       Must currently hold non-residential and residential certification as a Building Inspector, Electrical Inspector, Mechanical Inspector, and Fire      Protection Inspector.

d.      Non-residential and/or residential Plumbing Inspector and Master Plans Examiner certifications desired.

e.       Must possess a valid driver’s license.

IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE:

a.       Ability to read, comprehend, interpret and implement all national, state, and local building and related codes.

b.      Ability to read and interpret technical materials relevant to these codes for the purpose of communicating appropriate information to applicants, code violators, and other appropriate parties.

c.       Ability to direct, supervise, and coordinate the functions and activities of the Cleveland Heights Building Department.

d.      Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external constituencies.

e.       Ability to analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and implement solutions.

f.       Must possess good professional judgment.

g.      Ability to perform duties and responsibilities in a highly ethical manner.

h.      Must have knowledge and a general understating of public administration including budgeting and program management.

i.        Ability to express and exchange ideas, instructions, and information accurately and clearly.

 

Status:            Permanent, Full-Time                                   Annual Salary:             $80,000 – $95,000
