Job Title: Residential Building Inspector
Location: University Heights, Ohio
Salary Range: Commensurate with experience

Under direction, conducts inspections of residential construction and rental properties as required or instructed to ensure conformance with applicable building codes, zoning regulations, and housing standards, and performs all related work as required.
Key Responsibilities
- Conducts field inspections and re-inspections of one- and two-family dwellings, residential additions, alterations, accessory structures, and rental properties to ensure conformance with applicable residential building codes and housing regulations.
- Performs inspections at various stages of residential construction, including footing, foundation, framing, insulation, and final inspections.
- Reviews approved plans and permits to verify compliance with residential building and zoning requirements.
- Identifies code violations and accurately enters and documents inspection activity and results into all applicable electronic systems
- Investigates complaints related to residential construction and rental occupancy standards.
- Recommends corrective measures necessary to achieve code compliance; prepares inspection reports, correspondence, and related documentation as required.
- Prepares and issues warnings, correction notices, and violation notices as needed; conducts follow-up inspections with contractors, property owners, landlords, and tenants.
- Provides information to the general public regarding residential building codes, rental requirements, and interpretation of applicable regulations.
- Maintains accurate inspection records and files in accordance with departmental and legal requirements.
Qualifications
- Possession of a valid Ohio driver’s license; must be able to qualify for and remain insurable under the City’s vehicle insurance policy.
- Must possess a State of Ohio Residential Building Inspector Certification
Desirable Skills & Attributes
- Strong working knowledge of residential building codes, housing regulations, and regulatory compliance.
- Experience interpreting construction drawings, plans, and specifications.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Experience with municipal inspection activity tracking, reporting, and electronic permitting/inspection systems.
- Ability to work independently while exercising sound judgment and professionalism with the public.
