The City of Broadview Heights is looking to fill a Part Time Property Maintenance/Building Inspector position. Hours will be primarily day shift, Monday – Friday, up to 28 hours/week. In this job, you would be responsible for conducting property inspections and identifying code violations related to high weeds and grass, garbage, abandoned vehicles and exterior building maintenance issues; if you hold OBBS Certification, you could also be performing building inspections and responding to code related issues. Writing timely and complete reports and recording information on the Building Department HDS software system is required. Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments.
Job Purpose
This position is responsible for performing specialized functions associated with enforcing city codes and ordinances pertaining to signs, litter, overgrowth, abandoned vehicles, and dumpsites; performs other work as required. If certified through OBBS, will also conduct building inspections to ensure compliance with approved plans and applicable codes.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Conducts property inspections and identifies property maintenance code violations.
- Receives and investigates complaints regarding high weeds and grass, garbage, abandoned vehicles and exterior building maintenance issues. If certified as a Building Inspector through OBBS, also performs building inspections and investigates and responds to code related issues.
- Coordinates investigations with other City departments and works with home owners to resolve complaints and code violations.
- Inputs violations to Building Department Software (HDS or equivalent); discusses code compliance or noncompliance with property owners. Writes reports related to inspections.
- Discusses complaints and code violations with all concerned parties (in person, on the telephone or via email), maintains record of activities, investigates and reaches resolution of findings.
- Issues Citations as needed.
- Reports to court when necessary to follow-up on citations issued.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
• High school diploma or equivalent. • Valid driver’s license, with ability to be covered under City’s vehicle liability insurance. • Strong communications skills and ability to enforce regulations with tact and impartiality required. • Related training and experience as an inspector is preferred; ability to learn inspection duties on the job is required. • Current OBBS certification (full or interim) as a Building Inspector with demonstrated knowledge of the Ohio Building code is preferred. • Experience with or ability to learn and use HDS software or similar is required. • Familiarity with MS Word, Excel and Outlook, with ability to compose detailed inspection reports with possible corrective actions is required.
Special Requirements
Work is performed in both an indoor and outdoor environment. May be required to traverse uneven terrain, climb ladders and walk on steep slope roofs. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle.
